Phi Beta Sigma Acts of Hazing Released

Staff Writer

Phi Beta Sigma was suspended by Salisbury University in March for unreleased acts of hazing within the fraternity; the specific forms of hazing now released in a Daily Times report include “physical abuse,” “forced drinking” and “acts of coercion.”

“The Daily Times article was accurate in its facts,” Director of Student Activities Tricia Garvey Smith said.

The newspaper gained documents through the Freedom of Information Act that addressed the specific findings of the fraternity paddling new members, forcing them to drink “a substance” and following acts of coercion demonstrated by active members.

Individuals have privately been held responsible by the university for their involvement, said Smith.

The fraternity is currently suspended until the spring of 2017 for their violations against the university Code of Conduct.
