Justice for Peace rally set for tomorrow in Red Square

Members of the campus community are invited to take place in a Justice For Peace rally tomorrow night in Red Square from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The goal of the rally is to seek justice for those who have lost their lives in interactions with law enforcement and to stand up for revised law enforcement training and community policing methods, according to an email sent out yesterday by Salisbury University’s president’s office.

The email specified that SU supports campus and local police but the protest serves as a message that the community wants a review of community policing methods.

There will be campus speakers, a live visual art instillation featuring over 100 participants, free Justice for Peace T-shirts for the first 200 participants and on-site support from the university Counseling Center, according to the email.

Dr. James King of Salisbury University’s English department also sent out a statement entitled “Dear Students” to SU students, urging them to take time between now and tomorrow to process the message they’re trying to send. That message, according to King, is to stand for the lives that have been lost and to peacefully assert the need for consequences for law enforcement officers when they do not act in accordance with the law.

“Center yourself in knowing that our cause is just and our demands far from unreasonable,” King said.

The peace rally is an SU National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) event with full administration support, according to an executive board member from NAACP. The event is also backed by other SU organizations.

SU NAACP issued this statement to The Flyer about the Justice for Peace Rally”

“This event is important because it brings the campus together in order to address a national issue on a grand scale. It gives people a chance to bring awareness and take action in issues that they care about. The strongest voice is a unified one.”
