MBK: Barcikowski buzzer-beater nominated for GEICO Play of the Year

It was the most anticipated match-up in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) in the first half of the season. The Salisbury men’s basketball team slowly crept into the Top 10 nationally just before the match-up due to their best start in program history. With Christopher Newport ranked fifth in the nation, it set up a Top 10 match-up that will go down as potentially one of the best games this season.

Back on Dec. 17,  little was known about the CAC and national blueprint in 2017. But one thing was known: the CNU vs. SU rivalry lived on.

That day brought another dramatic ending that became the forefront of the last two match-ups between the teams last season. It came down to a few seconds on the clock. Salisbury was down 58-56 with CNU guard Kevin Regimbal at the line with one free throw remaining.

Here is a video of the moment via the Salisbury University Sports Information Department:

Junior forward Chad Barcikowski took a few strides after the rebound and launched a half-court three that connected. It sealed a 59-58 victory for the Sea Gulls.

From there, the implications in the short-term were massive, but those in the long-term may be even more. The win is a high mark on Salisbury’s NCAA Tournament profile.

That same day, the video went viral across social media. It was even picked up by ESPN and posted on their Instagram account. The video was viewed over 724,000 times.

Now one of the highlights of the season for Salisbury men’s basketball returns as a nomination for the GEICO Play of the Year. The contest is an online fan vote of highlights from across the season to this point.

The Barcikowski buzzer-beater is a part of the ‘Week 3’ grouping. Fans can visit this site to vote on nominations on a computer for mobile device. Also, voting is available on Facebook on the page: GEICO Best of College Basketball. Voting is open until Feb. 20 for Salisbury’s group.

One play moves on from each grouping every week until a group of finalists is voted on at the end of the initial round. The winner will be broadcasted nationally on television during CBS’s live coverage of the Division I NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
